Abney Hall - on Explore! ⭐ September 9, 2020

            Abney Hall was built in 1847 and is the focal point of the park. The Hall is built on the original site of ‘Cheadle Grove Print Works’, which was built in 1760 and later burnt to the ground in 1847. Alfred Orell, built his home here in 1847 and named it ‘The Grove’ (after the print works). Abney’s grand structure and landscaped gardens tell of the wealth of the first owner, a former Mayor of Stockport and cotton magnate.

By 1857 Abney Hall was ready to accommodate Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, during a two-day visit to Manchester, and was described as ‘one of the most princely mansions in the neighbourhood’.  Many famous people have stayed at Abney including King Edward VII, Victorian Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, English novelist E.M. Forster and Prime Minister Gladstone. Agatha Christie often stayed and penned two novels here, ‘The tale of the Christmas pudding’ and ‘After the Funeral’ when it was home to Agatha’s brother-in-law James Watts. Abney created a secret hide-away for the publicity-shy author and the Hall and Park was also used as a basis for Chimneys, a country house and seat of the fictional Marquesses of Caterham, in The Secret of Chimneys and The Seven Dials Mystery. Many references to various places around Cheadle can be found in her books with Abney becoming Agatha’s greatest inspiration for country-house life, with all the servants and grandeur which have been woven into her plots. In 1878 Sir James Watts died and the last Mr. Watts moved out in 1958.
