The Greeks alley in the city center of Vienna

            The toponym Greek Quarter refers to an area in the 1st district of Vienna Inner City. It is located on the meat market and borders west to the so-called Jewish quarter. The term is used today rather in a historical context.

At the meat market settled about 1700 Greek merchants, who were mainly active in the Oriental trade. On 17 January 1685 John Theodat opened in his home on Haarmarkt, today Rotenturmstraße 14, the first Viennese coffee house. [1] [2] While once the quarter (like the entire city center) was socially mixed, starting from 1848 a move of the wealthier Viennese Greeks began. The Palais Dumba and the Palais Ephrussi, for example, were built on the Ringstrasse. In the Greek quarter were still the business of merchants, their meeting place was the Greebeisl, on whose side lies the alleyway. However, there were also printers who supplied the Greek population with Greek-language literature, such as the printer P. Markides at Rotenturmstraße 21, where Rigas Feraios had some of his books printed.

In the 19th century, the St. George's Church and the Greek Church were built into the Holy Trinity in its present form. Not far from the district was the Palais Sina of the eponymous Greek-Austrian entrepreneurial family.
