The Cottonwood - a photo on Flickriver

The Cottonwood

            This magnificent cottonwood tree stands in the middle of Owens Valley. I've had my eye on it for many years, waiting for the right time to photograph it. Recently I have been reminded of how some things that seem like they will be there forever are not, and I went out of my way to capture at least one photo of this tree at peak fall color this year. Here it is in blue hour after sunset. I vast litter of broken branches rests beneath it, evidence of decades upon decades of battles with the elements of wind and drought. Growing up in Indiana I was never a fan of cottonwoods and how they inspire a certain allergic twitch in my nose. But here in California they don't have that effect at all, and their jagged branches intrigue me, as does the seemingly constant carnage of their limbs, and of course their fall color. So I am happy to have at least once captured this magnificent tree, and I hope I get to enjoy sharing the planet with it for a long time to come.
