02 Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25P Foxbat-A (146th GvIAP)

            The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 (NATO reporting name “Foxbat”) is a supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft that flew for the Soviet Union and its allies and former Soviet republics. It is one of the highest-flying military aircraft ever produced and the second-fastest after the SR-71 Blackbird. Conceived in 1958 by the Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO Strany), the new aircraft was tasked with intercepting US supersonic strategic bombers, such as the B-58 Hustler and B-70 Valkyrie, and high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft such as the U-2 and SR-71. The requirements for the aircraft were attaining speeds of 3,000 km/h (1,864 mph) and an altitude of 27,000 m (88,583 ft). The Mikoyan and Sukhoi design bureaus responded, but Mikoyan won the day with its impressive design.

The Soviet Air Defence Forces (voyska protivovozdushnoy oborony, or voyska PVO, or V-PVO) was the air defence branch of the Soviet Armed Forces. Formed in 1941, the V-PVO continued to be a part of the Russian Armed Forces after 1991 until it was merged into the Air Force in 1998. Unlike Western air defence forces, V-PVO was a branch of the military unto itself, separate from the Soviet Air Force (VVS). During the Soviet era, it was generally ranked third in importance of the Soviet services, behind the Strategic Missile Forces and the Ground Forces. The PVO itself was divided into the Radiotechnical Troops, the Surface-to-Air Missile Troops, and Fighter Aviation branch, known as the istrebitel’naya aviatsiya or IA-PVO. The IA-PVO had the responsibility of denying USAF strategic bombers and spy aircraft from penetrating Soviet airspace.
