Yellow-crowned Night Heron juvenile preening

            This juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron was a rare visitor to Alberta, Canada, in October, 2021. Here it is doing some preening with a foot, the lid of its large eye closed as protection against an accidental brush with one of its good-sized toes. It would also preen with its large bill. The bird was seen at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in the city of Calgary.
