Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Male (Selasphorous platycercus); Santa Fe National Forest, NM, Thompson Ridge [Lou Feltz]

            To get these close Hummer images I rig this twig prop about two feet above a heavily visited nectar feeder. I place it where I can isolate the bird against a distant forest background resulting in the bokeh shown. The more aggressive males will position themselves on this twig to ward off other males attempting to drink... they let the females in.  (They have no concept of monogomus matrimony!) This aggressive guarding behavior is similar to what happens naturally. Any especially productive blooming flower patch likely will have a male standing guard and claiming it as his own.
