Adapting - a photo on Flickriver

Adapting

            A couple of days ago I came across this Blue Heron hunkered down in the snow at our local park. I was surprised to see him. Most herons fly south for the winter. But we still have some open water on the river in the park. That provides this guy with a food source , plus any mice and voles he can catch. He seems to be very comfortable with people around and he allowed me to get close for this capture without spooking him. Herons have an adaptation in the way their feet work that keeps his feet from freezing in the cold water.  He is floofing his feathers and staying still to keep warm on this day.
