Ravin du Troyon

            Morning fog covers part of the Ravin du Troyon sloping up the Chemin des Dames ridge.

During the French offensive on 16 April 1917 this sector of the Chemin des Dames between Cerny-en-Laonnois and Ailles was heavily defended by the Germans with several tunnels of which the French staff was largely unaware.

In this valley, north of Vendresse, with its steep slope towards the Chemin des Dames, men of the 5th Colonial Infantry Regiment (15th Colonial Division) reached the first German trench line on the ridge but were soon afterwards pinned down by heavy machine gun fire.

The 15th Colonial Division suffered some 1,700 casualties on 16 April. The attacking divisions of the 20th Colonial Corps took over 5,000 dead, wounded and missing that day.
