Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) is a UK charity that funds research into, and supports people living with, blood cancers (i.e. leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, among others).

Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK. And while huge progress has been made in improving treatment since Bloodwise was founded in 1960, it is still the third biggest cause of UK cancer deaths – taking more lives each year than breast or prostate cancer.

Bloodwise was originally set up in 1960 as the Leukaemia Research Fund. The charity was started by the Eastwood family from Middlesbrough, who began raising money following the death of their six-year-old daughter, Susan.

Since the first leukaemia research unit was opened in 1961, Bloodwise has invested £500 million in scientific research into blood cancer. It’s thanks to all this work, as part of a global movement of research into blood cancer, that six in 10 people diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK now survive at least five years.

Had Susan Eastwood been diagnosed with the same type of blood cancer today, it is likely that she would have lived.

For the last forty years, Bloodwise has staged a fundraising carol concert at the Royal Albert Hall. It's the Albert Hall's longest-running annual event, apart from the Proms.

This year's concert featured Luke Evans, Pixie Lott, Natalie Rushdie, Ruby Turner MBE, Rick Astley, Kerry Ellis, Sam Wilkinson and Lee Mead, along with the London Chorale, supported by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

I attended this year's concert as a volunteer and took a few shots with a phone whose low-light capabilities are somewhat overrated. I'll take a better camera next time!
