Black Force, Carlin Gill, Howgill Fells, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Cumbria, UK

After Cautley Force (England's tallest above-ground waterfall), ~4 km away, this has to be the next-most-impressive waterfall in the Howgills, where Little Ulgill Beck cascades ~100 m to meet Carlingill Beck. Maybe more impressive; it can be difficult to appreciate the whole tiered curve of Cautley Spout from a single viewpoint.

Though the light's not great, I like to visit the base of Black Force in winter, when the bare trees complement the exposed Silurian gritstone of the cliffs. Spring might be good too, but this part of upper Carlin Gill is off-limits mid-February–May/June, to avoid disturbance to nesting raptors. Technically, the official restriction only applies to Black Force's ravine and immediate sideslopes, but I wouldn't want to dissuade the birds from using nest sites on neighbouring cliffs.

For some reason the image is looking blurred in the standard Flickr interface, at least on this PC, ruining the sense of depth. Hence, as always, I recommend On Black or Fluidr. Or just try viewing larger versions - I do think it's worth it!
