Cautley Spout, Howgill Fells near Sedbergh, Yorkshire Dales National Park, Cumbria, UK

Following sustained rainfall onto uplands yet to recover from Storm Desmond earlier in the month, river levels in the Howgills were rather higher than normal. A good day to visit Cautley Spout....

Falling 198 m from the hanging valley of Red Gill Beck into the main corrie of Cautley Holme Beck's valley, Cautley Spout* is considered the highest waterfall in England, with two caveats:
• It's the highest above ground – waterfalls in cave systems, such as Gaping Gill, 26 km away, are taller.
• It's a cascade waterfall, with four major steps. However, the tallest individual drop allegedly still falls 76 m (I'm unconvinced; just by eye, I'd say it's 35-40 m), which alone seems to qualify as England's tallest single drop, and seventh in the UK.

It's tricky to capture the whole of the ~400 m-long curved cascade from a single viewpoint (hint: try Ben End); this just shows the wooded middle section, including the top of that main drop. Just off the right, the (very) steep path to the top of the waterfall – more of a staircase in places – is one of the few in the Howgills where one is likely to encounter anyone else!

*: Not 'The Spout'; that's a different waterfall, 4 km away in Carlingill.
