2/100: My Parents on Their Wedding Day

            The marriage of Genie Rollings and William Brackett Valentine was held Monday, 7 September 1953 in Arlington, VA, at the home of the groom's parents.

The bride was attended by her sister Mary Ellen Wheeler.  The groom was attended by his brother Robert Valentine.  The bride's dress and veil had previously been worn by her sister Jessie Green.  I presume the formal "dinner jacket" tuxedo was a rental; it matched the best man's.

Honeymoon in Bermuda; first home in Arlington, VA.

Somewhere or other around here I have a photocopy of the Grundy County TN (bride's hometown) newspaper article, with all the details that were considered important in 1953.  I believe it describes the bridal gown as tea-length and the bouquet as orchids and stephanotis.

The vicissitudes of life - various moves, loss of a storage unit, home fire, and so on - mean that this is the only photograph I have of my father, and one of only about 1/2 dozen of my mother.  I do have and cherish the beautiful pearl necklace you have to look closely to see.

Scanned and resized/edited partly for use on their Find A Grave memorials and partly for a sense of security.

He was 28, she was 24.  I came along 10 years later (to save you from math, I'm 46.) When I was little, they looked like "old fogies" in this picture.  Now they look like a couple of kids.  LOL.
