Iceberg Lake, Glacier National Park - a photo on Flickriver

            Scouting locations to shoot while on our summer trip I came across a lake in Glacier called Iceberg Lake.  I looked through some images shot there and there actually not that many sensational images to be found.  Huh.  Why?  This thing has ice in it year round.  So I dig more.  

Well.. hang on..ah yes, there it is.  Its a 9 mile hike.  Ok, so that's out.  Then the wife sees the place over my shoulder.  "I want to go there!"  "Dear, its 9 miles, you are going alone."  Well, that did not last.  Once it was in her head, I was doing the hike regardless of the length.  

It was a challenging location.  The sun only hits the lake for very short periods of time, hence it never melting.  And when it does fall on the lake it does nothing for the backdrop, a sheer wall of stone that gets no light play at all, so its flat and dull.  I can see why amazing images from here are rare.  So I went in close instead.  This is actually a panorama from a 500mm on a tripod sitting in the water (the tripod, not the lens), stitched in Photoshop. When I got there I took out my water bottle and placed it in the lake.  When I left about an hour later it was so very cold.  

All in all it was totally worth the hike.  The real picture should have been taken in the cafe at the end of the trail as my whole crew ate in silence, with drool dripping from out faces.  We were zombies at that point.
