If this could be considered a performance in space by the Moon, the Earth and the Sun, Lunar eclipse 2010 was surely an award-winning one, leaving people in US and Mexico gaping at the sky Tuesday night. The lunar eclipse 2010 was spot on, just as NASA had predicted. It went red and brown and then disappeared behind the shadows of the earth. Being visible only to people in the US and Mexico, the lunar eclipse 2010 photos and videos have also become the latest rage on the internet.
What made the lunar eclipse 2010 so special was the fact that it coincided with the winter solstice, that is, when the moon is at its highest in the sky, making the phenomenon look extra-beautiful. Though the last lunar eclipse was in 2008, it is the first time in 400 years that it has happened on a winter solstice.
People who got to watch the eclipse recall how the moon went red from reflecting the light from volcanoes and then slowly started getting covered by the shadow of the earth at 6:32 am. The complete lunar eclipse happened at 7:40am when the moon disappeared. The luckiest thing for the millions in US and Mexico is the fact that they experienced clear skies; people in London were disappointed. As Dr Robert Massey of the Royal Astronomical Society explains, “In northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, people had a good view. It did not go well in London as it was clouded out.”
