Sooner or later we all get one.

Bad news can leave you in a state of dread and despair. It seems like our whole world is collapsing, almost as if we’re being driven into the ground. We fear the very worst and cannot get it out of our mind. There are other emotions mangled in, anger, guilt, despair, betrayal, and love.

After receiving bad news, it's very important to regain control over our emotions.

Bad news, put it into its proper context. Think about all the good things in your life, including those that have been and those that are yet to come. Its difficult to believe that there will be good things to come - but there are.

When people say "it could have been worse" and you know they are wrong - don't blame them - they just don't understand. People often want to help but don't know how. They don't know what to say - so they often fall back on platitudes and well meaning nonsense.

They do say that "time heals" - well that's only partly true; time just lets you get what's just happened and the rest of your life in perspective. Things don't "heal" you just learn to live with them.

Don't do anything in a rush - it will seem as if you must do something - anything to try and make things better; don't.

Wait, think things through, you have plenty of time. People understand you have received bad or devastating news and will not expect you to deal with things immediately.

Cry, weep, wail, rant and rave, let the emotions loose (you may want to do this in private - but do it) - it helps.
