Fallen Guardians #3: Langley Green, West Midlands

            50033 ‘Glorious’ passes Langley Green, in the southwestern suburbs of Birmingham, with a football special returning to Plymouth.

Saturday 14th April 1984 was the day of an FA semi-final between third division Plymouth Argyle and Watford, with the game played at Villa Park in Birmingham. 20,000 Plymouth fans travelled to Villa Park for the game, with a proportion conveyed by four special trains, all being class 50 hauled and all routed via Worcester, Kidderminster and Stourbridge Junction.  Although Watford won the game with a 1:0 final score, the consensus was that the ‘pilgrims’ had played well on the day.

Semaphore signalling on this, the former Great Western route from Stourbridge to Galton Junction, was removed in August 1990. 

Like many British cities, semaphore signalling is extinct in Birmingham and indeed, across the entire West Midlands with the last semaphores in the West Midlands (at Bloxwich) being removed in 2014.
