Tasman Island I

            Tasman Island off the tip of the peninsula of the same name, south-eastern Tasmania.

Tasman Island has Australia's highest operational lighthouse at 276m above sea level. The lighthouse, visible in the centre of the island, was erected in 1906 and is constructed of curved, cast iron plates. The steeply-sided island was once only accessible to swap keepers and take on supplies by boat on very rare calm days (like the day I took this) and then by cable haulage-way from a point on the left (northern) side of the island to the top. Maintenance is now done by helicopter.

The light was de-manned in 1977 and is also now solar powered. The beam from the lighthouse can be seen up to 72km away in clear weather.

The last light keepers to leave abandoned several domestic cats that subsequently bred, decimating all bird and animal life on the island. In 2002, the island's some 50 feral cats were munching their way through an estimated 50,000 seabirds a year. An eradication program was begun in 2009 with all cats declared deceased by 2012. Shearwaters and Fairy Prions are now in recovery! Yay! Now for the rest of Tasmania! 

The land immediately to the north of the passage is Cape Pillar but more specifically, the high prominence known as the "The Blade", so named for the very narrow spine of columnar dolerite that runs directly at the island. There is a lookout at the very top of The Blade (262m ASL) - a single block of very exposed stone wide enough for one - totally not for the faint-hearted! Another picture to come from there.

My previous post of the area - Clytie Bight - was taken from just above that V-shaped landslip scar on the Blade looking back at the bluff the camera is sitting on in this shot. The landslip is a reminder to walkers and climbers that the dolerite is weathering....

We were totally blessed by the weather - any kind of wind makes the cliffs pretty interesting to walk around on!
