Lon Sanders Canyon Conservation Area - Stone Staircase

Located just outside the City of Peidmont in Wayne County, Missouri, Lon Sanders Canyon is a shut-in formed by McKenzie Creek as it winds its way through the rocky canyon, forming various waterfalls and pools along its path. The remnants of stone stairs cut into the steep bluffs and two small rock dams are all that remain of an attempt by a St. Louis entrepreneur named Lon Sanders to build a private resort in the canyon.

This is a photo of one of several stone staircases along the canyon. This one appears to just lead into the face of a sheer bluff.

I’ve spent some time trying to research Lon Sanders and his resort, but I’ve been unable to find very much information. As best as I can tell, Mr. Sanders was born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1866, and came to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1887. There, he started the Sanders Engraving Company, which manufactured electrotypers and engravers. Soon he had plants in St. Louis, Memphis and Chattanooga, Tennessee. As far as the ill-fated resort, I have been unable to find any information to indicate when he began construction and what happened to the resort. If anyone has more information, please feel free to add it to the comments below.

I did discover that according to local lore, the trail leading down into the canyon is allegedly haunted. People have reported hearing the voice of a woman faintly calling out from the surrounding woods “Please! Help me.” In 1973, Peidmont (pop. 1,977) gained a bit of national notoriety when hundreds of people reported UFO sighting in the area. I am pleased to state that during my short visit to the canyon, I encountered neither screaming women nor aliens. Nonetheless, Lon Sanders Canyon Conservation Area is one of the prettier spots in southern Missouri.
