            Captain Mark Getman, New York Guard State Defense Force, Deputy Public Affairs Officer Joint Task Force Javits, a second-generation Holocaust survivor commemorates Yom HaShoah/ Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center Mass Vaccination Site in Manhattan, New York, April 8, 2021.

Cpt Getman spoke about the importance of never forgetting the tragedies of the Holocaust, as he imparted stories, and shared reflections from the book “Borders of Hope” which was written by his late father, Abraham Getman, a Holocaust survivor. Getman recounted the struggles faced by his father who lived in a Nazi created “ghetto” and his eventual escape from a deadly labor camp.  The elder Getman was the only member of his family to survive, save for his brother who had left for Palestine/Israel prior to the war. The message Cpt Getman stressed from sharing his father’s memories is that we should never forget the innocent lives lost due to hatred and discrimination and that we should never let such atrocities ever occur again.
