Head for the Hills

            The iconic Hills Brothers Coffee statue stands in the courtyard of Hills Plaza in San Francisco, CA.

Believe it or not, this building has a Disney connection. If you've been to the Pixar studios in Emeryville, CA or to the Pixar Place area in Disney's Hollwood Studios you should recognize this brick pattern. 

When building Pixar's gorgeous campus in Emeryville, Steve Jobs was reportedly so taken with the color and pattern of the brickwork in this building that he had the bricks for the main Pixar building custom fired to match (requiring extensive research and significant expense). I don't know if the folks at Disney used exactly the same type of bricks in Pixar Place, but they definitely went to great pains to make them look similar.

Back to the statue, here's the inscription:

"Hills Bros. Coffee Trademark. Created by sculptor Spero Anargyros, the familiar beared figure in turban and flowing robe logo was originally designed for Hills Bros. by a local San Francisco artist just before the turn of the century. In 1900, when Hill Bros. originated the process for vacuum-packing coffee, this trademark appeared on the first Hills Bros. vacuum-packed coffee can. It has lived on through all the years as a lasting symbol of coffee quality."
