            Le tournesol, ou anciennement héliotrope et maurelle1 (Helianthus annuus), est une grande plante, pouvant atteindre jusqu'à 4 m de hauteur. Cette plante a été domestiquée par les Amérindiens et les Mexicains  qui l'utilisaient pour ses propriétés alimentaires et médicinale. Elle a été introduite en Europe au XVIe siècle par les Espagnols. On la trouvait cultivée au début du XVIIIe siècle en France dans le Languedoc. La sommité était recueillie pour faire de la « teinture en drapeau », chiffons imprégnés de teinture qui sont ensuite exportés à Lyon, en Allemagne, en Hollande et en Angleterre pour donner une jolie teinte au vin. Sa culture comme plante oléagineuse se développa qu’au XIXe siècle en Russie.
Sunflower, or formerly heliotrope and maurelle1 (Helianthus annuus), is a large plant, up to 4 m tall. This plant was domesticated by Native Americans and Mexicans who used it for its nutritional and medicinal properties. It was introduced in Europe in the sixteenth century by the Spanish. It was found cultivated at the beginning of the eighteenth century in France in Languedoc. The top was collected to make the "flag dyeing" rags impregnated with dyeing which are then exported to Lyon, Germany, Holland and England to give a nice shade to the wine. Its cultivation as an oleaginous plant developed in the nineteenth century in Russia.
El girasol, o anteriormente heliotropo y maurelle1 (Helianthus annuus), es una planta grande, de hasta 4 m de altura. Esta planta fue domesticada por nativos americanos y mexicanos que la usaron por sus propiedades nutricionales y medicinales. Fue introducido en Europa en el siglo XVI por los españoles. Fue encontrado cultivado a principios del siglo XVIII en Francia en Languedoc. La parte superior se recolectó para hacer que los trapos de "teñido de la bandera" se impregnaran con teñido que luego se exportan a Lyon, Alemania, Holanda e Inglaterra para dar una agradable sombra al vino. Su cultivo como planta oleaginosa se desarrolló en el siglo XIX en Rusia.
