1908_7028 Western Red Cedar

            The other evening I had a brief conversation with a longtime resident of the little prairie town where I have lived these past ten years. She visited the west coast once, and evidently hated it. The mountains were too steep; the forests too dark. She felt hemmed in and claustrophobic. The area's immense beauty was lost on her because of her psychological response. She could't wait to get back to the wide open spaces fo the prairie.

I am fortunate in that I can enjoy and appreciate both places (and others, too). The temperate rain forests of coastal British Columbia are one of my comfort zones on the planet; I love the moist air, the towering Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars - one of which is seen here. This place is green year round, and yes, it rains a lot. What a stark contrast to the semi-arid zone of southwestern Saskatchewan! 

I made this photo on northern Vancouver Island two summers ago. During that trip I primarily photographed bears, eagles, and otters, but I spent some time among the trees, too.
