Captain America Modern - Bijou Planks 217/365

After receiving Dr. Erskine's Super Soldier Serum,* Steve Rogers finally fulfilled his dream of fighting for liberty as Captain America.

Alongside his sidekick, "Bucky Barnes", Captain America fought the enemies of freedom in World War 2.**

In late April 1945, during the closing days of World War II, Captain America and Bucky tried to stop the villainous Baron Zemo from destroying an experimental drone plane.

The pair reached the plane just before takeoff. When Bucky tried to defuse the bomb, it exploded in mid-air. Rogers was hurled into the freezing waters of the North Atlantic while Barnes disappeared in the fireball. Both were presumed dead, though it is later revealed that neither had died.

In 1963, Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, in his usual mood of irrational anger, found a group of Eskimos worshiping a block of ice. Namor took the slab of ice and threw it into the ocean. Unknown to Namor, the Eskimos' fascination with the ice was the man frozen inside. Steve Rogers, Captain America.

The ice floated in the currents, coming to warm waters and melting. As Rogers was freed from the ice, the Avengers were passing in one of their submersibles. They retrieved the body and, to their shock, the man was alive. To their greater shock, the man turned out to be the legend of WW2, Captain America.

Rogers adapted to his new surroundings, haunted by memories of the past, particularly with Bucky, and struggling as a "man out of time". And while it was the Super Serum that enabled Rogers to survive physically, it was his unrelenting, steadfast character of resolute determination to make the world a better place, that enabled him to survive mentally and emotionally.

Captain America joined the Avengers and, alongside that team, and on his own, he continued to do what he does best: Fight for freedom.

Captain America was key in facing the Communist threat in the 1960s. In the 1970s he turned more attention to domestic intrusions from international criminal organizations such as Hydra and AIM. To this end, Rogers became heavily involved with S.H.I.E.L.D., working with another war veteran, Nick Fury.

As the decades have marched on, the threats have come from new and different sources, sporting different looks and mottos, but Captain America has remained the same, battling and defeating them at every step.
