Women at Calvary

"The sons of Zebedee, mentioned in today’s Gospel, are St James (the Greater) and St John the Beloved Disciple. But who was their mother who is not named in today’s passage from St Matthew’s Gospel? Tradition identifies her as Mary Salome, mentioned in St Mark’s Gospel as having stood at the foot of the Cross with Our Lady and St Mary Magdalene, and who would join them in bringing spices to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus. As such, the mother of the sons of Zebedee was among the first to discover the Empty Tomb of the Risen Lord, and she was sent by the angel to tell the men about the Resurrection. So, she is among the women disciples of the Lord who followed him as he preached in Galilee, walking alongside Jesus and the Twelve Apostles, and also served him, ministering to Jesus. We know this because St Mark explicitly says this (cf Mk 15:40f). Hence, in today’s Gospel, even as Jesus is speaking to the Twelve, immediately after that, she approaches Jesus, so we can assume that she had been following them, and listening to his teaching as a disciple would."

This painting is part of the Starck Triptych, c.1480-90 from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC shows Our Lady with the other women and St John at the foot of the Cross. Among these women is Mary Salome.
