Hatfield Colliery, South Yorkshire - a photo on Flickriver

            Once a workplace for hundreds of miners and ancillary staff and now just a ruin of an industrial era long since closed. This is Hatfield Colliery, or Hatfield Main as it was once called. 

It's been closed now since 2015. the only workers left are the securty guards and their dogs - be warned, they are big dogs if you were thinking of doing some urban photography. Anyway on the afternoon of 28/06/2018 I was in the area and noticed a cloud of smoke not too far away. Being nosey I went for a look. Turned out to be a grass fire on the old spoil heap next to the old winding gear.

The UK was in the middle of a prolonged heatwave with many grass fires around the country. Luckily this fire didn't seem to spread to the coal still hidden beneath the spoil heap as later in the day when I came past on my way home the smoke was no longer in the air.
