La route du Col de Stelvio - The Stelvio Pass Road

Le col du Stelvio (en italien : Passo dello Stelvio, en allemand : Stilfser Joch) est le plus haut col routier des Alpes italiennes avec 2 758 mètres d'altitude. Situé au nord-est de Bormio, dans le parc national du Stelvio, c'est aussi le second plus haut col routier de toutes les Alpes après celui du col de l'Iseran (2 764 m).
Les soixante virages en lacets de la route, dont 48 numérotés sur des pierres sur le versant nord, constituent une attraction pour les deux-roues. Il est ouvert de juin à septembre. Chaque année vers la fin août, le col est fermé aux véhicules motorisés pendant une journée et il est escaladé par 8 000 cyclistes.
Régulièrement sur le parcours du Giro et à ce titre Cima Coppi, il constitue la plus haute arrivée d'étape d'un grand Tour cycliste3. En 2012, le Belge Thomas De Gendt s'y est imposé lors de la 20e étape. Son premier passage date de 1953 et voit le passage de Fausto Coppi devant Hugo Koblet. Un mausolée à la mémoire de l'Italien y a été érigé.

The Stelvio pass (in Italian: Passo dello Stelvio, in German: Stilfser Joch) is the highest road pass in the Italian Alps with an altitude of 2,758 metres. Located in the north-east of Bormio, in the Stelvio National Park, it is also the second highest road pass of all the Alps after that of the Iseran pass (2,764 m).
The sixty curves of the road, 48 of which are numbered on stones on the north slope, are an attraction for the two-wheelers. It is open from June to September. Every year near the end of August, the pass is closed to motorized vehicles for one day and is climbed by 8,000 cyclists.
Regularly on the Giro route and as Cima Coppi, it is the highest stage finish of a great Tour cycliste3. In 2012, the Belgian Thomas De Gendt won in the 20th stage. His first crossing dates from 1953 and sees the passage of Fausto Coppi in front of Hugo Koblet. A mausoleum in memory of the Italian was erected there.
