Special:
- "We want to build a small car, but not a soapbox," said Assar Gabrielsson, a Swedish industrialist and co-founder of Volvo, and designer Helmer Petterson went to work.
- The result was the PV 444.
- PV stands for "PersonVagn", the first "4" for 4 seats and the last "44" for the year 1944.
- Only after WWII, in 1947, production got really going.
- The PV 444 was replaced by the PV 544 in 1958.
- The PV544 was produced parallel to the Amazon. The Amazon was indeed intended as a successor to the popular Volvo PV 444, which wass a real "people's car". But the Amazon showed many PV 444 riders too luxurious and (therefore) too expensive. A temporary solution became the Volvo PV 544.
- A lot of improvements were made in 1961, including the B-18 engine, a modern interior (based on the the Amazon), standard seat belts (front), bigger windows all around, a new grille, bigger rear lights and a 12-Volts electric system.
- They were available as "Favorit" (with a three-speed manual gearbox), as "Special" and "Sport" (dual SU carburettors), both with a four-speed manual gearbox.
- They have rear wheel drive and the engine is fed by a SU carburettor.
- VOLVO made​​, over other car manufacturers, much more use of subcontractors.
