Manoa Valley on the Manoa Falls Trail - Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii

            Part of what makes the Hawaiian Islands such an alluring destination is its wide variety of landscapes. Beaches and sandy, tropical ocean views are the most typical and what most people think of but rain forests are also part of the islands make-up. Even on the heavily developed island of Oahu, there are several heavily forested areas on the island that qualify as Hawaiian rain forest. A tropical (or rain) forest is a woodland that receives at least 80 inches of rain per year. And, to additionally classify as a rain forest, a woodland must have an average temperature of 64 degrees over the course of twelve months—which explains why rain forests are found in the warmer regions of the world like the Pacific Islands of Hawaii in this instance. Also, an interesting fact...the rain forests of the world comprise half of all species of animals and plants on Earth. While taking this hike through the area in this photo, I can definitely understand these stats...there were abundant varieties of plants as you can see but also numerous sounds of all kinds of animals.

This was something that I wanted to experience while in Hawaii...we knew that we would see all the beach, ocean, and sand that we could handle but finding this area in the Manoa Valley and hiking to Manoa Falls was an experience completely different from everything else we did during our visit! Take time to get out of the box on vacation and experience all the location has to offer...

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image.  Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.
