Smoky Mountain View from Fort Loudoun - Vonore, Tennessee

The Great Smoky Mountains name comes from the natural fog that often hangs over the range and presents as large smoke plumes from a distance. It typically appears as a blue haze (or "smoke") hanging over the mountains farther away. This haze or fog is caused by the vegetation emitting volatile organic compounds, chemicals that have a high vapor pressure and easily form vapors at normal temperature and pressure.

This photograph was taken at Fort Loudoun in Vonore, Tennessee looking southeast toward the Smoky Mountains and through the autumn colored trees around Tellico Lake. Out in the distance, you can see the blue 'smoke' hovering over the mountain ranges.

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.
