Traralgon VIC

My upload for a weekly challenge I'm doing with a group of Flickr friends. This week's theme is colourful.

St Michael's Church, Traralgon, was built c1936 from Briagolong sandstone to a design by architects Fritsch & Fritsch. It was substantially enlarged in 1978, with the sandstone from the old side walls being utilised elsewhere in the extensions, and new steel-framed translucent side walls infilled with colourful glass windows. The extensions were designed by architect Paul Archibald.

Stained glass windows have long been used to tell stories, and centuries ago when most people were illiterate, they were a means of conveying stories such as those from the Bible.

This Northern Window of St Michael's Church, titled "God and the Church", symbolises the following:

The green hand represents God the Father.
The cross surrounded by rays of light and glory represents God the Son.
The white dove represents God the Holy Spirit.
The boat and sail represent the Church, and people are entering it.

There is also symbolic significance in the colours used. Red is the colour of love, green the colour of creativity, blue the colour of living water, gold/yellow the colour of divinity, and clear the colour of humanity.

A much larger 24m x 3m long window is on the southern side of the building. Together with this northern window, they have transformed this neo-Gothic church into an interior of amazing light and space.
