Locomotive History
Originally D417 it was built at the English Electric Vulcan Foundry works and entered traffic, allocated to Crewe in April 1968 on Crewe – Glasgow West Coast Main Line duties. In May 1974 with the completion of the electrification to Glasgow 50017 was transferred to Bristol for Western Region duties. The Western Region decided to name the class 50 locomotives after Royal Navy Warships and 50017 was named Royal Oak during April 1978, without ceremony, at Laira. 50017 was refurbished at Doncaster Works in the winter of 1979/80 and re-entered traffic on the 5th February 1980. It survived in traffic until withdrawn in September 1991.
