08401_1976_08_Doncaster_A3_600dpi

            Ten years after the introduction of Rail Blue a still green Doncaster Works pilot 08401 is stabled in the works complex, 8th August 1976.

08401 would retain its green livery for another two years until a classified repair at Swindon Works in October 1978 during which it was fitted with train air brakes. This would be a key factor in 08401 still being in mainline use until quite recently.

Locomotive History
08401 was originally D3516 and was built at Derby Works, entering traffic in May 1958, allocated to Laira MPD. It spent its early years as a Western Region with spells at St Blazey, Exmouth Junction, Westbury and Bristol Bath Road before transferring to Doncaster in August 1968. It remained at Doncaster for the next twelve years until transferred to Frodingham in September 1980. On the closure of Frodingham in January 1987 it transferred to Immingham and remained until 2010 when it was sold to LHGS at Barton under Needwood. Following overhaul it has had spells at Whitemoor, Boulby, Cardiff Celsa, Bounds Green, Doncaster Wabtec and Hams Hall and is currently (July 2020) back at Barton under Needwood for exam/re-allocation.
