            A “bunk round” my local depot Toton on the 15th August 1976 finds 44006 Whernside stabled outside the front of the shed.

Locomotive History
44006 was built at Derby Works and was originally D6. It was one of a class of ten locomotives which were the “pilot series” of the Peak Type 4 locomotives. They were initially allocated to express passenger duties on the West Coast and Midland Main Lines with D6 entering traffic, allocated to Camden in November 1959. It was immediately loaned to Derby but was back on West Coast duties in April 1960 when it transferred to Carlisle Upperby. In 1962 the ten pilot series Peaks were relegated to freight locomotives and transferred to Toton for use on heavy freight duties in the continuing dieselisation of freight traffic in the East Midlands. From here to withdrawal the ten class 44 locomotives would be synonymous with Toton, in general only working to the limits of the route knowledge of Toton's goods link drivers and usually on out and back turns. 44006 was withdrawn in January 1977 and broken up almost immediately at Derby Works so that five months after this photograph had been taken it no longer existed.
