THE IRON BRIDGE, ZARAGOZA, SPAIN, 2022

            The "Puente de Hierro" (Iron Bridge) is its popular name, although its official name is the "Puente de Nuestra Señora del Pilar" (Our Lady of El Pillar Bridge).

The iron bridge was one of the first fixed bridges to be built in Zaragoza, having previously only been pontoons and plank bridges that were often destroyed by the Ebro floods. When the iron bridge was built at the end of the century 19th century, only the so-called "Stone Bridge" existed as a fixed structure for the transit of people and vehicles, built in the 15th century, although apparently a similar structure already existed at the time of the Roman Empire.

At the end of the 20th century, the bridge underwent a profound remodeling process directed by Javier Manterola.

The metal structure is repaired, painted and cleaned and two arch-shaped side boards are added for the passage of vehicles.

The central platform will be reserved for pedestrian use. The remodeling ends in 1991.

The need to paint it to prevent corrosion led to a popular vote in 2010 to choose the colors of the bridge, where the combination of blue and white —the colors of the Real Zaragoza soccer team— was the winner, replacing the original green color. (Source: Wikipedia)

El "Puente de Hierro" (Iron Bridge) es su nombre popular, aunque su nombre oficial es el "puente de Nuestra Señora del Pilar" (Our Lady of El Pillar Bridge).

El puente de hierro fue uno de los primeros puentes fijos que se construyeron en Zaragoza, habiendo habido anteriormente tan solo pontones y puentes de tablas que a menudo se veían destruidos por las avenidas del Ebro. Cuando se construyó el puente de hierro a finales del siglo xix, tan solo existía como estructura fija para el tránsito de personas y vehículos el llamado "puente de piedra" (Stone Bridge) construido en el siglo xv, aunque al parecer ya existía una estructura similar en época del Imperio Romano.

A finales del siglo XX, el puente sufre un profundo proceso de remodelación dirigido por Javier Manterola.

La estructura metálica se repara, se pinta y se limpia y se le añaden dos tableros laterales en forma de arco para el paso de los vehículos.

La plataforma central se reservará para uso peatonal. La remodelación finaliza en el año 1991.

La necesidad de pintarlo para prevenir la corrosión motivó en 2010 una votación popular para escoger los colores del puente donde resultó ganadora la combinación de azul y blanco —los colores del Real Zaragoza, equipo de fútbol— en sustitución del original color verde. (Fuente: Wikipedia)
