A Tempest Gathers 'Round the Vortex - a photo on Flickriver

            Like a temple rising from the chaparral, Bell Rock stands in quiet contemplation as storm clouds gather overhead.

Hiking along Bell Rock Trail, one gets a sense of what the ancient peoples inhabiting this place must have felt, exposed to the elements, searching for shelter when the rare rains come in torrents.  The hardy pinyon pines and desert brush offer little comfort, except to say survival is for the strong of constitution; endurance, not kindness, is the hallmark of this land.

In more modern times, people have come to believe that Sedona is a sacred energy crossroads, with spiritual vortexes scattered around the region, not unlike the random red rock outcroppings.   Bell Rock is home to one of these, a strong Upflow or Masculine vortex that enhances serenity and provides a spiritual perspective to problem solving.

Then again, maybe the concept isn't so modern after all...
