Who would want to trespass? - a photo on Flickriver

Looking over some private property (which shouldn't be private) next to Baseline Reservoir at the Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado. The sign is a "no trespassing" sign. You can barely see the National Center of Atmospheric Research above the pier about halfway up the mountain. The large mountain on the left is Bear Peak.

As I've said in other photos, seeing the Boulder hills covered with snow reminds me of Ernest Hemingway's short story called "Hills Like White Elephants."

Americans are really into property rights. Sme economists claim this notion is core to progress. Maybe. In Sweden they have the concept of allemansrätten, where anybody can roam on any land (allemansrätten = all men's right) as long as they don't damage the property and don't camp or tromp within around 50 yards of a home. Swedes are very respectful of this tradition.

In the US the property owner is liable for any accidents that might occur on the property. So who in theri right mind would open their property up and then be sued when a tree falls on some trespasser? This is another case of lawyers run amuck.

Another thing you'll notice in Sweden is that rarely to people own shoreline poperty. Almost always, there's a traul and public access to every inch of shoreline, for all to enjoy. In fact usually a road separates homes from shoreline. That can happen when developers aren't trying to push "lake front" property and getting those bigger and bigger commisions.

Of course, the owners will say they paid more for the privacy and fr lakefront property so "keep out."
