Break Your Back Cascades - Explored - a photo on Flickriver

            This is "Break Your Back" Cascades.  It's located north of Sunburst Falls on Hwy 215 in western North Carolina.  There is a slight trail beside a guardrail but after that it's a bushwhack. 

As I was bushwhacking I came to a somewhat steep hill I needed to get down to the stream.  It looked like stable dirt so I attempted to safely descend.  It turned out to be quite unstable and so down I go landing quite hard on my backpack.  I luckily didn't get hurt but I imagine when I wake up tomorrow my back is going to be very sore.  So as much as I preach about being safe, sometimes falls are going to occur.  So always hike with a friend and tell someone where you're going.  

Conditions on the Parkway this morning weren't good for photography - very high winds and heavy fog.  But as we headed north on Hwy 215 the fall colors were really nice - very close to peak.  Shortly after Sunburst Falls, the color stops.

The winds at this location were barely tolerable.  I took a few shots of each composition, one long exposure for the water and then one or two "fast" shutter speeds to try to freeze the leaves.  The best I could do at ISO 1000 or thereabouts was 1/40th second.  So I waited until there was a lull in the wind and hit the shutter.  I then blended the shots to hopefully get the best of both.

If you want to experience this color, get out this week.  Be aware water flow is pretty weak.
