The Dusky or Black Whaler occurs in warm seas worldwide. Juveniles typically inhabit shallow coastal waters, while adults prefer deeper conditions offshore. Juvenile Dusky Whalers have appeared in Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve every summer since 2003, only departing for warmer waters when the winter chill arrives. The long-term presence of top predators in the Reserve is a sign of a healthy ecosystem and indicates the "no-take" sanctuary is effective.
Adult Dusky Whalers may reach 3.65 metres in length (some authorities claim over 4 metres). Large specimens must be considered potentially dangerous.
