Fraser Island - Sunset (1) (F) - a photo on Flickriver

            With a length of 120km and a width of 24km it is the largest island off the east coast of Australia and the 6th largest in Australia. Probably it is most famous because with an area of 184,000 hectares it is the largest sand island in the world and became a World Heritage Site in 1992.

The first people to live on the island were the Butchulla people who may have had first contact with Europeans, the Portuguese explorer Cristovao de Menonca, as far back as 1521. It is possible that the Dutch arrived here in the 17th century due to clay pipes being found at Indian Head. Captain Cook first sighted the island in 1770 but thought it was connected to the mainland. It was not until 1799 that Mathew Flinders, in the sloop ship called the Norfolk, confirmed it to be an island. Due to conflicts and disease many Aborigines died with the last remaining few leaving the island in 1904.
