Direct Rail Services 37425 at Dawlish

            Taking me a little by surprise (largely because it wasn't advertised) is Direct Rail Services Class 37, 37425, and an unidentified fellow classmate as they rumble along the Sea Wall with a railtour from Eastleigh to Paignton, their beautiful, growling English Electric engines echoing across the bay as they dodged from tunnel to tunnel between Dawlish and Teignmouth.

The Class 37's were once major parts of the railway scene here in the South West, taking over from the Diesel-Hydraulic Class 35 Hymeks on most freight operations. Their roles primarily extended to working the heavy Clay traffic of Cornwall, mainly between Goonbarrow Junction and Fowey on one of several diagrams per day. The locomotives however were also employed on clay operations to Newton Abbot, Moorswater and Burngullow, as well as the fuel train to Laira and Longrock HST depots, and to the home base of the Cornish Class 37's, St Blazey depot near Par. Another of their notable runs was with the famous 'Silver Bullet' rake of clay hoppers travelling from Burngullow to Dollands Moor, but this job was handed over to Class 60's in around 1994.

Since the end of the 1990's, the Cornish and Devon valleys that once echoed to their mighty engines have since been sileneced, their duties taken over by the mass-introduction of Class 66 locomotives by EWS. The last known operations of Class 37's on Clay Traffic here in the South West was around 2002/2003, after which they're now very rare visitors apart from on railtours and those preserved on the many heritage lines of Devon and Cornwall.
