            I've been given a very unique opportunity to scan a bunch of old negatives from the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel mill that are in the collection of the Greater Monessen Historical Society. There are thousands of 4x5, 120, and 8x10 negatives that were rescued from the mill offices before they were demolished. I've gone through about 800 so far, scanning a selected 100 negatives from that batch.

The photos are from a currently unknown photographer(s) at the mill, mostly documenting conditions and issues around certain areas of the plant. Lots of images, for example, of the ore yard from certain vantage points that are repeated multiple times, implying that those images were probably used for a weekly or monthly report. In addition, there are a number of images of personnel that were used for ID badges. There are even glass plate negatives from microscope images of the grain structure of steel samples.

As I clean up the dust and scratches from the negatives, I'll be sharing some of the more interesting images here. The entire collection of images that I scan will probably end up on the Historical Society facebook page as well as The Mon Valley Photo Works facebook page.

We'll start with one of my favorite photos from this batch - an unidentified steelworker looks out over Monessen from somewhere above the No. 3 furnace
