Gilded bronze statue of Johann Strauss
The Johann Strauss monument is located in Vienna's city park and is one of the most photographed monuments in Vienna. It was in commemoration of the "King of Waltz" (forerunner of Elvis Presley?) Johann Strauss son (or the younger) built next to Kursalon Hübner.
The gilded bronze statue on a marble base shows the Viennese waltz king standing - without the thick whiskers - with a violin in his hand in front of a with leaves and floating pairs in relief Laas marble arch.
History
In 1903, four years after Strauss 's death, a committee was constituted under the President Princess Rosa Croy-Sternberg for the erection of a monument in honor of the composer. Initially, as installation site the Franz-Josef-Kai was provided, until 1907 the current location in the city park was established. The Vienna City Council assented in 1905 a cost sharing of 10,000 crowns, but this was not paid out until 1913. In 1906 was by the committee a competition tendered. Inter alia, participated the architect Alfred Castelliz (1870-1940), as well as the sculptors Franz Metzner and Edmund Hellmer, the draft of which has been unanimously approved by the Committee.
The execution was delayed constantly, on the one hand because of financing problems and on the other hand also by the outbreak of the First World War. On 23th January 1920 approved the Vienna City Council once again a larger sum and on 26th June 1921 followed the solemn unveiling, at which, inter alia, the Vienna Philharmonic struck up.
In 1935, the gilding of the Strauss statue that had become defective was removed and only in 1991 the original condition of the monument restored.
