            Clark, Gruber & Co. $5 Gold Piece. When the Pikes Peak gold rush began in 1858, the local economy in Colorado quickly became dependent upon gold dust as the primary means of exchange. But gold dust had serious drawbacks as a vehicle for routine commercial transactions, particularly the lack of reliable weights and measures. Two Clark brothers, who were grocers from Kansas City, and their partner, Emanuel Gruber, recognized an opportunity to establish a private bank in Denver to buy gold dust from miners and mint coins of standard weight, purity and value. Clark, Gruber & Co. began business in 1859 and established an enviable reputation for integrity. It's gold coins became the primary currency in Denver and the gold fields. When the U.S. Treasury authorized the establishment a mint in Denver in 1862, the company sold its facilities to the goverment. Today, Clark Gruber gold pieces are highly prized by collectors and sell for very rich multiples over the value of the gold. (On loan to the Mines Museum of Earth Science. Golden, Colo.)
