The island's French side is known for its beaches including the famous Orient Beach, clothes, shopping outdoor markets, French and Indian Caribbean cuisine. 

The official language is French for Saint-Martin, other common languages include various French-based creoles.
 
On March 23, 1648, France and the Dutch Republic agreed to divide the island between their two territories, with the signing of the Treaty of Concordia.
 

Saint Martin is part of the Leeward Islands in the West Indies.
