Crystal Lake is a narrow creek-fed lake near my home in NW, Arkansas. The Ozark landscape is dotted with large lakes and rolling hills, and Crystal Lake is a mini version of everything stunning about the landscape. I liked this lake a lot due to a couple of reasons. First, its smaller size means I usually only have a few fishermen to share the lakeshore. Secondly, even though small, this lake has some tall cliffs, and the spot where wolf creek meets the lake is absolutely gorgeous.

Since my first visit to this gorgeous lake, I knew I had to take some images that showcased its beauty. The one problem, I have never been very good at taking photographs of lakes or still bodies of water. Also, the spot where the creek meets the lake is narrow and has a weird angle making it in shadows at both sunset and sunrise. As we were returning home on a recent trip, I noticed that the fluffy clouds were sticking around, unlike typical summer evenings, even as the sunset got closer. So I decided to try the lake one more time and got there about 15 mins to sunset. Thankfully the clouds stayed, and I had gorgeous lighting conditions. I had this composition in mind for a longtime and precious few seconds to make it work as sunset would plunge the trees on either side to shadows. I exposed two images, one for most of the scene and one specifically for the highlights, and blended the two images using luminosity masks. I love how the result turned out.
