Patterns in nature

            An older image of the Jersey Tiger moth (Euplagia quadripunctaria) taken back in August. This is the second specimen that visited our garden. I like the way it sits conspicuously on spear-shaped leaves of gladiolus showing off its remarkable forewing markings. This year, the moth was sighted in large numbers in England and I have seen it around our area on four occasions. 

The English common name originates from the dominant sightings of this species in the Channel Islands in the past though a warmer climate facilitates their spreading further inland in England. The scientific name describes the general appearance of the moth. ‘Euplagia’ is a composite of the two Greek words, ‘Eu’ and ‘plagios’ meaning ‘beautiful’ and ‘oblique’ respectively, with the reference to cream-coloured diagonal stripes on black-bluish forewings. This black-and-white pattern helps the moth to disappear in undergrowth when spooked. This type of camouflage is certainly doesn’t work here. The scientific epithet ‘quadripunctaria’ means ‘four spot’ derived from the respective Latin words ‘quadri’ and ‘punctum’ describes large black spots on red-coloured rear wings which are not visible when the moth is resting like here.
