Joy 1. (Painting and poem) - a photo on Flickriver

            Mixed media and acrylics. Done for the May 29 deadline of the Deadline Painting Group on Flickr. Subject "Joy"

Poem 
Joy can't be switched on like an electric light
Or released in the air in perpetual flight
It is a reaction to something seen or said,
A smile, a birth, a laugh, a poem read.
So start today as you stroll the street
Go smile at any one you chance to  meet
And you will find this random feat
Passed to whoever they happen to greet
And so on and so on and in the throes
Passed to the next person and on it goes
It's a viral reaction  all can see,
A universal serendipity.
It could be you'll find that after a while
In the same street of that very first smile
It comes back to you with  proud elation.
Having done a circumnavigation
Its mission complete - some glumness to destroy
For, like a virus spread, joy begets fresh joy.
It's not happiness, don't get me wrong
It does't last that long
Nor is it ecstasy, oh forbidden fruit
Which comes from a dangerous root
Joy comes instantly without fuss
That's why some of the magic
Rubs off on us.
