I had a lovely gentle comment on my last picture about Kings and Princesses, and it did make me think a little bit about ‘Britishness’.

British friends of a certain age will remember former Prime Minister John Major’s talk of ‘cricket and warm beer’. Much derided at the time, I think he was actually on to something.

If I had to point to something though I would say the linked video comes close to summing up many of our national characteristics.

The song was made for the England football team for the Italian 1990 World Cup. Apparently John Barnes wrote the rap himself and it was recorded in a single take! Half the team didn’t turn up to the recording. The song itself was co-written with the comedian Keith Allen. Despite all of this, there is a certain assured confidence.

In the end, Eng-geer-land made it to the semi-finals.

The connection with the picture? Well, the locomotive is 91109 named after ‘Sir Bobby Robson’, the England manager in 1990. In addition, we have a famous football saying, ‘it was a game of two halves’ and that’s so too with the picture!

The reflection is in a curved poster holding, no Photoshop involved, just a monochrome conversion in Photos on iPhone.
