Micropolis - The Consumer Building

This build was inspired by The Century Building at 220 S. State Street in Chicago. History of the actual building can be seen here... www.flickr.com/photos/skincheftom/36333074906/in/album-72... And yes, I switched the names of the buildings.

Completed in 1913, in my Micropolis world, The Consumer Building and it's neighbor, The Century Building marked a turning point for the growing Micropolis. No longer confined to 2, 3, 5, 7 or even 10 story buildings, the Consumer Building, at 16 stories, plus an attic floor, changed the skyline of Micropolis, and announced the emergence of a commerce power in the region. Had this building been built on a traditional quarter standard Micropolis block, it would have need over 32 stories to achieve the same square feet.

Filled with a wide variety of commercial and retail tenants when opened, by the 1980's, the building had showed it's age. In 1999, new owners renovated the building inside and out, The large Chicago School style windows on the first, second and third floor, were inspiration for turning the first three floors into a mini shopping mall, with Crate and Barrel, Trader Joe's and Pottery barn as anchor tenants. The second floor now includes a trendy food hall concept.

The office space above includes three floors for the Micropolis School District central offices and 2 floors for the Micropolis Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MMTA). Buildings of this period had horizontal details on several floors to break up the vertical boringness of taller buildings. I have been a fan of 1x2 plates with door rails to represent this, but if the trim is the same color as the rest of the building, the door rail seems to blend in. So I tried a bolder modified 1x2 plate option, and really liked it. The roof detail on the original building, immediately reminded of of the 1x1 mod brick I used here. I really like the overall effect.


This MOC required 2306 pieces and is actually 11 1/2 inches tall.
