Syzygium malaccense is a species of flowering tree native to Malaysia, Indonesia (Sumatra and Java) Vietnam, Thailand, New Guinea and Australia. It has been introduced throughout the tropics, including many Caribbean countries and territories such as Jamaica where it is known simply as "Jamaican apple" or the more common Otaheite apple.
It has a number of English common names. It is known as a Malay rose apple, or simply Malay apple, mountain apple, rose apple, Otaheite apple, pink satin-ash and pommerac (derived from pomme Malac, meaning "Malayan apple" in French). Despite the fact that it is sometimes called the otaheite cashew, it is not related to cashew. While cashew nuts (but not cashew fruits) may trigger allergic reactions, rose apple fruit has not been observed to do so. In Hawaii it is called "mountain apple". 
The combination of tree, flowers and fruit has been praised as the most beautiful of the Syzygium family. The fruit is oblong-shaped and dark red in color, although some varieties have white or pink skins. The flesh is white and surrounds a large seed. Its taste is bland but refreshing. Jam is prepared by stewing the flesh with brown sugar and ginger.

Syzygium malaccense is een soort bloeiende boom afkomstig uit Maleisië, Indonesië (Sumatra en Java), Vietnam, Thailand, Nieuw-Guinea en Australië. Het is in de tropen geïntroduceerd, waaronder veel Caribische landen en gebieden zoals Jamaica, waar het eenvoudigweg bekend staat als \"Jamaicaanse appel\" of de meer gebruikelijke Otaheite-appel.\nHet heeft een aantal Engelse gemeenschappelijke namen. Het staat bekend als een Maleise rozenappel, of simpelweg Maleise appel, bergappel, rozenappel, Otaheite appel, roze satijnas en pommerac (afgeleid van pomme Malac, wat in het Frans \"Maleise appel\" betekent). Ondanks het feit dat het soms de otaheïte cashew wordt genoemd, is het niet gerelateerd aan cashew. In Hawaï wordt het \"bergappel\" genoemd.\nDe combinatie van boom, bloemen en fruit wordt geprezen als de mooiste van de Syzygium-familie. De vrucht is langwerpig en donkerrood van kleur, hoewel sommige soorten een witte of roze schil hebben. Het vlees is wit en omringt een groot zaad. De smaak is flauw maar verfrissend. Jam wordt bereid door het vlees te stoven met bruine suiker en gember.

Jambeiro, normalmente fica carregadinho de frutas. De tanta abundância de frutas faz-se que até os passarinhos se enjoem delas rapidamente. Os coatis comem as que caem no chão. Os pássaros, muito abundantes, vão beliscando algumas, no pé mesmo. Não tem muita graça a fruta, tipo picolé de chuchu. Sabor a nada. Elas podem ser usadas para sucos e para fazer geléia que fica saborosa. É um sabor único, pouco doce, o que é agradável para quem não gosta de coisas muito doces ou tem problemas de diabete ou intolerância aos açúcares...
